Applying for a loan in the Netherlands as an expat

Arranging finance in another country can be confusing, especially when websites and documents use Dutch terms. At Krediet Groep Nederland, we look at where you live, your bank account, your income and your credit record. The bank may also ask questions about your residence status. This guide explains the application process in plain English and makes clear what expats and temporary visitors can expect.

Can expats apply for a loan in the Netherlands?

Yes, an expat who lives in the Netherlands may be able to apply for a loan with us. You must be between 25 and 80 years old, live in the Netherlands and have a Dutch bank account. You also need income that the lender can accept. This may be income from permanent or temporary employment. Self-employed applicants usually need at least two years of business history.

The lender also checks the Dutch credit registration system, called Bureau Krediet Registratie (BKR). A negative BKR record can prevent approval. Meeting the basic conditions is not a guarantee, because the lender still assesses your full income, expenses, existing loans and personal situation.

Can tourists or temporary visitors get a loan in the Netherlands?

If you are only visiting the Netherlands and do not live here, you do not meet the general residence condition for a loan with us. A personal loan, which is a fixed amount that you repay in monthly instalments, is not intended as short-term travel finance. If you are moving to the Netherlands, you can check your options once you live here, have a Dutch bank account and can show that your income meets the lender’s requirements.

What do the Dutch words on the loan application form mean?

Our online form uses several Dutch financial terms. These translations help you enter the correct information:

Dutch term Meaning in English
Leenbedrag Loan amount
Leendoel Purpose of the loan
Netto inkomen per maand Net monthly income
Soort inkomen Type of income
Woonsituatie Living situation
Woonlasten Monthly housing costs
Vrijblijvende offerte No-obligation quote

Which documents do expats need for a loan application?

The exact documents depend on the bank and your personal situation. You will usually need a valid passport, identity card or residence permit, recent payslips or another proof of income, and recent bank statements. In some cases, you can share your bank data through a secure digital connection. If you submit an identity card or residence permit, provide both sides and make sure all details are clear and readable.

With a temporary employment contract, the bank may also request an employer’s statement. This is a form completed by your employer to confirm your job, income and whether continued employment is expected. We provide an English employer’s statement. The bank may request additional documents about your residence status or income before making a final decision.

How does the loan application process work in the Netherlands?

The application follows three clear steps:

  1. Calculate your options. Enter the amount you want to borrow, your income and your monthly housing costs to get a first indication.
  1. Complete the application. Fill in your details as accurately as possible. We assess your request and send you a no-obligation quote by email if there is a suitable option.
  1. Accept the quote and upload your documents. After accepting the quote, upload the signed document and all requested files securely through the Financieel Fit app. We then send the complete application to the bank selected for your application. The bank makes the final decision.

How long does an expat loan application take?

Once the quote is signed and all requested documents are complete, we aim to arrange your loan within two to three working days. An application can take longer if information is missing or the bank needs additional documents about your income or residence status. Submitting clear, complete and current documents helps prevent unnecessary delays.
